Xiaoyan Qian is an Associate Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management in the School of Management Science and Engineering at DongBei University of Finance and Economics in China. Xiaoyan received her Ph.D. at the University of Auckland business school in 2017, New Zealand. Xiaoyan’s research interests include agriculture supply chain, stochastic models, dynamic programming. Her research currently focuses on the modelling contracts and incentives in agricultural coops with an emphasis on operational and financial decisions. Her work with Professor Tava Olsen ‘operational and financial decisions within proportional investment cooperatives’ has been published in Manufacturing & Service Operations Management.
An agricultural cooperative (co-op) is a special organization that is owned, financed, and controlled by a group of farmers who collaborate by pooling resources for their own mutual benefit. This talk introduces some features relevant to agricultural co-ops’ financial management and how they influence the operational decisions. In a paper, we include unique features of co-ops into an analytical model and derive some key results that are different from those for investor-owned corporations. To further investigate their financial problems, I will also introduce a case study of co-op capital structure optimization in the New Zealand Dairy Industry using Fonterra Co-op Group Limited. A Markov decision process (MDP) model captures the relationships among the various financial instruments, and a numerical analysis by an Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) algorithm derives results and evaluates the financial performance under different scenarios.
